FAQs

Window & door repair questions, answered

The problems we are asked about most, what causes them and how they are repaired.

Why is there moisture inside my double glazing?

The seal on a double glazed unit can break down over time, letting air and moisture in between the panes. Condensation then forms as temperatures rise and fall. We can replace the glass unit whatever its size, without replacing the frame.

Can you match my existing glass?

Yes. We supply all types of glass unit, including Georgian bar, lead square and diamond designs, and a wide range of obscure patterns to match your existing units.

Why is my door sticking, or not locking properly?

Doors can drop over time, which makes them catch at the bottom. It also means the locking mechanism no longer lines up with the keeps in the frame, so the door is harder to lock and you have to force the handle up. In most cases this is put right by realigning the door with an adjustment to the hinges.

What happens if I leave a door that is hard to lock?

The lock can fail completely, which costs more to put right. If that has already happened, we can get the door open and replace the whole lock.

Why are my windows letting in draughts?

The hinges may be worn or broken. When hinges need replacing, the window often does not pull in against the frame, and that lets draughts in. New hinges solve it.

My patio door will not slide. Can it be repaired?

Yes. The wheels under the door have most likely rusted or broken. We replace them so the door slides smoothly again.

Can you fit a cat flap in a uPVC or glass door?

Yes. If your door has a PVCu panel at the bottom, we fit the cat flap into the existing panel. If it has glass, we replace it with either a new glass unit or a new PVCu panel with the cat flap built in.

Can an existing window be made into a fire escape?

We can change the hinges on an existing window to fire escape hinges, which give a larger opening in an emergency.

There is condensation on the room side of my windows. Is the glass faulty?

Probably not. Condensation on the inside surface is caused by warm, damp air meeting a colder surface. We can install trickle vents to improve ventilation, or you can try leaving the window locked on its night latch.

Can you make my windows and doors more secure?

Yes. We supply and fit locking window handles to existing windows, and can add additional security locks to existing doors and patio doors.

Do you repair windows and doors fitted by another company?

Yes. We repair all makes and designs of window and door, regardless of who installed them, in PVCu, aluminium and wood.
